Pregnancy sleep positions

Getting comfortable sleep during pregnancy can be challenging, especially as your belly grows. The right sleep position can improve circulation, reduce back pain, and ensure your baby gets enough oxygen.

Best Sleep Position: SOS

Sleep on your side (SOS) — preferably the left side — is the best position during pregnancy. It improves blood flow and nutrients to your baby, and reduces pressure on your liver. Use pillows between your knees and under your belly for extra comfort.

Positions to Avoid

  • Back sleeping: After the first trimester, lying on your back can compress major blood vessels and reduce blood flow to your baby.
  • Stomach sleeping: As your belly grows, this becomes impossible and uncomfortable.

Tips for Better Sleep

  • Use a pregnancy pillow for support
  • Sleep on your left side with knees bent
  • Keep your bedroom cool and dark
  • Avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evening
  • Establish a bedtime routine
  • Use relaxation techniques like deep breathing
